If you are concerned about the quality of the air inside your Houston home, you have probably encountered companies offering indoor air quality testing services. Before you invest in professional testing, it is important to understand what these tests actually measure, what they cannot tell you, and when a comprehensive HVAC inspection may be a better first step.
What Indoor Air Quality Tests Actually Measure
Professional indoor air quality testing typically assesses several categories of airborne contaminants:
**Particulate matter concentration.** Tests measure the levels of fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) suspended in your indoor air, including dust, pollen, pet dander, and mold spores.
**Volatile organic compounds (VOCs).** Tests detect chemical compounds released by cleaning products, paints, adhesives, building materials, and personal care products that become trapped in enclosed living spaces.
**Biological contaminants.** Some tests assess airborne mold spore counts and bacterial concentrations, helping to identify whether biological growth is active inside your home.
**Temperature and humidity levels.** These measurements identify conditions that support mold growth, dust mite reproduction, and general indoor air quality degradation.
What Testing Cannot Tell You
Test results will show you what is in the air, but they will not tell you where the contamination is coming from. Elevated particulate counts could originate from your HVAC system, from an open window, from an adjacent property, or from any number of sources inside or outside your home.
Test results will not tell you whether your HVAC system needs cleaning. They will not identify accumulated debris on your evaporator coil, inside your plenum box, or on interior duct surfaces. And they will not provide a remediation plan.
When a Professional HVAC Inspection Is a Better First Step
For most Houston homeowners who are concerned about indoor air quality, a professional inspection of the HVAC system provides more actionable and more immediately useful information than standalone air quality testing. Our NADCA-certified technicians examine all 8 HVAC components, document the actual physical condition of your system with photographs, and provide a clear recommendation based on what they find.
